COVID-19 Changes Hollywood Forever

It does not take an expert to determine that Hollywood has had a very drastic change since 2020. Many of us have had to suffer seeing our favorite shows or movies be canceled or postponed. Although Hollywood may seem to be going back to the way it was, there are several factors that will forever be different because of COVID-19. Personally, I think some things needed to be changed, and have been a long time coming. In this post we are going to be looking at what specific things were changed, and why these changes needed to be made.

Changes to Hollywood

Hollywood will forever be different because of COVID-19. It has forced Hollywood to face and adapt to different challenges, that are still in effect today. Specifically, the pandemic has heavily affected the diversity element in Hollywood. For example, in 2020, people of color made up 20% of film leads, which is a 12% incline since 2019, according to USA Today. The percentage of women leading films has also increased during the pandemic. The pandemic also cost movie theaters. This is because most people used streaming services instead of going out to the movies, which was not by choice. This caused many movies to be released on streaming services instead of theaters, which is very untraditional. Usually, after a movie has been released in the theaters, it takes a couple of months for the movie to come out on a streaming service such as Netflix or Disney Plus. Now, it is becoming more and more common for movies to be released on streaming services instead of movie theaters.

Why were these Changes Needed?

Being in quarantine gave us a lot of time to reflect on Hollywood, and what we were not happy with. We voiced our opinions, and thankfully, saw some change. The diversity in films continues to grow, and although it may sound odd, we must thank the pandemic. Without it, we might not have had the chance to critique Hollywood in the state that it was. Not only did we get more diversity, but sitcoms have been brought back. For example, In 2020, The Office had 57 million minutes of streaming time throughout all platforms. (NabShow). With the sitcom lovers returning, we have gotten more since the pandemic hit, including Ghosts, Extended, Family, and Extraordinary. We also got reunions for beloved sitcoms including Icarly, Zoey 101, and Friends.
